Nice article Chris. On the text editor front, I use a neat little app called Notepad++. It has syntax highlighting support for a dizzying number of languages, runs nicely on linux under wine and one of the features i've grown to love and depend on is its HTML tag (bracket) matching functionality. Its a great help when you're trying to validate your (X)HTML documents. I try to stay away from the more bloated IDE's. One of the best resources for beginners to learn PHP & MySQL believe it or not is w3schools.com. Its where I learned :)
